Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Acupuncture and TCM is based on the theory that energy (Qi) flows through the human body along channels known as meridians. The meridian channels connect all aspects of the body into one network of energetic communication. In eastern medicine the free flow and internal balance of this energy is seen as essential for good health. A blockage or restriction in the flow of this energy can impair the normal physiological functions of the body and manifest as a range of conditions. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis aims to determine the underlying cause of a condition. Acupuncture, alongside other TCM treatments are then utilised to treat the cause, and this in turn affects the condition.

How does it work?

In Acupuncture very fine needles are inserted just below the surface of the skin on specific acupuncture points which are located along the meridian channels. The TCM practitioner manipulates the needles to stimulate the flow of energy. This can produce a number of effects including increased blood circulation and stimulation of nerve function. Other TCM treatments, like Acupressure, Cupping and Moxibustion work on the same principles. Essentially acupuncture and other traditional Chinese medicine techniques aim to enable the flow of energy (Qi) and this in turn facilitates the body’s own healing mechanism. This is why acupuncture and TCM is so effective at treating such a wide range of conditions
